Protect fish and clean water from gold mining

Suction dredge gold mining is a practice in which riverbeds are “vacuumed up” by a large, loud, floating machine. Materials from the riverbed go through a sluice where heavy metals drop, in particular gold. Sediment is then discharged back into the river. Between 2009 and 2012, Oregon almost tripled the number of permits issued for suction dredge mining. Restrictions have been increasing in Idaho and California due to fish impacts and the mobilization of toxic mercury. As the price of gold fluctuates, miners rush to Oregon to cash in.
Meanwhile, gold mining using motorized equipment along these same streams has led to removal of trees that shade our streams and provide critical aquatic habitat. Mining in the floodplain involves the construction of pits in the floodplain that bleed sediment into our streams and capture and strand threatened salmon.
A bill before the Oregon legislature would finally enact permanent protections throughout Oregon from gold mining in salmon habitat, and streams already suffering from too much pollution.
Take Action: Please send a letter below urging a key committee to support Senate Bill 830 and protect our streams and riparian areas from gold mining!

ROGUE FLYFISHER MEETING

               Hank Rogers Memorial Picnic

Saturday June 20, 2015

Our annual Hank Rogers Memorial Picnic is changing this year. It will be held on Saturday, June 20th at River’s Edge Park at 4 PM up by the Holy Water.

This event is a combination get together and fishing outing and we are hoping that with the cooler weather that June provides (versus the pervious sweltering July dates) we will have a larger attendance. At least we will have a much more comfortable group! We are encouraging all new members and novice fishers to attend for hands-on assistance in fishing and casting techniques as well as veterans in our club with experience to share. Please bring your own snacks, fishing gear and a chair if desired as seating is not as plentiful at this venue. The club will furnish cold tea and lemonade. Any questions please contact Kellie at kclmbr@msn.com or Will at will@theashlandflyshop.com. Hope so see all of your there!

Need your help, Monday 6/15

We've gotten word that some anti-dam removal folks are trying to organize people for the county hearing this Monday June 15 at 1:30 pm when they will consider a permit needed for the removal of Fielder Dam. Would you be able to attend to show local support for the dam removal? I've pasted the info below. I've also attached a fact sheet specific to Fielder Dam, since this  permit is for that structure.

Please feel free to invite any other anglers who might want to attend and  say a few words of support.

 Thanks, Jim
