Dear
Members of the City Council:
Through
the 45 years of its existence, the Rogue Flyfishers, an organization of some 175
sportsmen and women, has engaged in many projects to help improve the quality
of the water in the Rogue River. It is
well known that maintaining and restoring riparian vegetation along the river
and its tributaries is one of the most important things that can be done to
ensure a healthy fish population.
Other
benefits of healthy riparian zones include lower water temperatures, erosion
control which can reduce property damage, channel and flow stabilization,
streamside habitat for a variety of birds and animals and a filtering system
for sediment and pollutants entering the river from other sources. There are many more, but we assume the
Council has spent time discussing all aspects of riparian zones as you have deliberated
and debated the proposal for the City to adopt a riparian ordinance patterned
after the State’s Safe Harbor rules.
Knowing
the benefits associated with riparian zone health, the Rogue Flyfishers
strongly urge the City Council to adopt Riparian Ordinance, CPA 15-01.
Sincerely,
Jack
Patterson
